Earthquakes can be measured in terms of energy released (energy pulses), the intensity, and the extent of damage caused. The amount of energy released during an earthquake is measured by the Richter scale. In addition to the Richter scale Mercalli scale is also used to measure the damage caused by the earthquake.
The instrument used to record earthquake vibrations is called a seismograph. Seismograph consists of two kinds, namely horizontal seismograph and vertical seismograph.
